Published on 10/25/05

For the second time in the Xterra's short life-span, the Nissan Xterra SUV has earned top honors from Motor Trend magazine. The 2006 Nissan Xterra has been officially named the SUV of the Year. The first award from Motor Trend came back in 2000 when Nissan initially launched the Xterra.

"A third-party endorsement is always a tremendous honor," Nissan Motor Company spokesman Maurice Durand said. "We're very proud of the Xterra, especially considering the competition."

According to reports, Motor Trend evaluated 12 vehicles in off-road, street and track tests. The contenders in this years contest were the 2006 models of the Ford Explorer, Hummer H3, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Commander, Kia Sportage, Mercedes-Benz ML, Mercury Mountaineer, Pontiac Torrent, Range Rover Sport, Subaru Tribeca and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

According to Motor Trend, only new or significantly redesigned vehicles that will be on sale before January 1st were considered.
