Mazda is a Japanese automobile maker based in Hiroshima, Japan. In 2005, the company produced about 800,000 automobiles with sales evenly divided between Japan, Europe, and North America. While the company began back in 1920, it was not until the Mazda R360 was introduced in 1960, that Mazda became an automobile manufacturer. The Ford Motor Company has owned 25% of Mazda since 1979, and later picked up a larger part of Mazda when their stake was increased to a 33.4% controlling interest in 1996 when Mazda fell into financial crisis. For today's consumer, Mazda offers a wide selection of vehicles including compact cars, sports cars, midsize coupes and sedans, as well as minivans, SUVs and one model of pickup truck. One of the most successful vehicles Mazda has produced in recent years for American buyers is the former Mazda Miata, now known as the Mazda MX-5. |
